"Agnes Moulton Coolbrith, daughter of Joseph and Mary Foss Coolbrith, was converted to the new religion while working in Boston, Massachusetts. Her home was in Scarborough, Maine, and when she and her roommate, Mary Bailey,.from Andover,.Massachusetts, were introduced to the new doctrine by Samuel Harrison Smith and Orson Hyde, they were deeply moved by the earnestness of the young preachers. This resulted in their conversion and decision to cast their lot with the body of the Saints. In 1833 they joined a train of covered wagons leaving for Kirtland, determined to participate in the building of a new Zion.
The girls were welcomed in Kirtland and became boarders in the home of Joseph and Lucy Mack Smith. "Mother Smith" had a hand in feeding, clothing, housing and schooling the various converts and she soon had the girls sewing and mending for the men who were building the temple. Mary Bailey did not remain long at the Smith home. She and Samuel were married soon after their arrival. Don Carlos, now seventeen years of age, was learning the printing trade and helping his brother Joseph, whom he supported wholeheartedly. Although Agnes was five years Don Carlos's senior, they were good companions and their relationship soon ripened into love. They were married July 30, 1835."
