     Elizabeth Clough was born on 16 December 1642 at Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.3,4,5,6 She was the daughter of John Clough and Jane (--?--).1,2 Elizabeth Clough married William Horne about 1660 at Salisbury.5 John Clough, believed in education for his daughters as well as for his sons. The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire (1939 edition, page 350) has this to say: "She, Widow Elizabeth, had the distinction of being the only woman to sign her own name, among many signers, of a petition to Massachusetts on Feb. 20 1689/90 to set up a temporary government. All other woman made their mark."5 Elizabeth Clough was probably killed by Indians on 30 September 1707 at Dover, Strafford County, New Hampshire, at age 64.7,5
