Ancestors of John Casper Clough

John Harmon was born in 1716 at Scarborough, Cumberland County, Maine.2 He was the son of Samuel Harmon and Mercy Simpson.1 John Harmon married Mary Hasty, daughter of Daniel Hasty and Mary (--?--), on 2 December 1742 at Scarborough.3 John Harmon married second Abigail Tibbetts on 30 May 1754 at Scarborough.4 John Harmon married third Elizabeth Hoyt, daughter of John Hoyt and Lettice Hasty, say 1760.4 Following this third marriage, John was indicted by the York Court, during it's April 1761 session, for the extraordinary crime of marrying his deceased wife's niece. The indictment read, in part, "for that the said John did at Scarboro aforesaid sometime in the month of July last wickedly presume to marry one Elizabeth Harmon of the same Scarboro, his first wife's sister's daughter ... against the peace in evil example to others." Probably not surprisingly, there is no record of the case ever coming to trial.4 John Harmon died after 1800 at Standish, Cumberland County, Maine.3
